Course overview

The SSI Wreck Diving specialty certifies you to explore shipwrecks safely, an ideal pairing for Zanzibar's historic wrecks off Stone Town. You apply survey, navigation and mapping skills on sites including a shallow British cable-laying ship in 4-12m and a deeper purposely sunk navy lighter near 30m.

What you’ll learn

• Plan wreck dives and assess site-specific hazards
• Survey and sketch a basic map of a wreck
• Navigate the exterior of a wreck with control
• Use reels and guidelines for safe light-zone entry where appropriate
• Handle silt, entanglement and overhead-environment risks
• Appreciate wreck history and responsible diving practice

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 15
• SSI Open Water Diver (Advanced Adventurer recommended)
• Deep Diving specialty advised for wrecks beyond 18m
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day1
   Survey & exploration

   Digital academics plus dives on the shallow Stone Town cable-ship wreck, focusing on survey and navigation.
2. Day2
   Mapping & safety

   Further dives applying mapping and line techniques, including a deeper wreck where conditions allow, to complete the rating.
