About frogfish

Frogfish are anglerfish in disguise — they sit motionless on sponges or rubble for days, perfectly camouflaged, dangling a modified fin as a lure. When prey approaches, they strike in roughly 6 milliseconds — one of the fastest predatory strikes in the animal kingdom.

Finding one is a challenge — they look like the substrate they sit on. Local guides usually know individual frogfish that have lived in the same spot for weeks. Once spotted, they don't move much — you can return to the same one across multiple dives.

Lembeh and Anilao are world frogfish capitals. Bali Tulamben has reliable hairy and giant frogfish. Andaman has them too if you have a sharp-eyed guide.
