Cuttlefish are like octopuses' more elegant cousins — they hover in mid-water, manipulate colour and pattern across their skin in real time, and hunt by mesmerising prey with strobing displays. Pharaoh and broadclub cuttlefish are the common reef species in SE Asia.
Encounters are best in seagrass or on rubble slopes. Approach slowly, hover at a distance, and watch the colour patterns — they're communicating in real time and often address you directly with displays.
Bali, Lembeh, Anilao and Andaman all have reliable populations. Mating season (varies regionally) is the best time — males display extravagantly and the entire reef becomes a colour show.
