Day-by-day itinerary
Day1
E-learning + theory exam
SSI online module: physics of diving, equipment, planning, safety. ~8–10 hours self-paced — most students finish over 2–3 evenings before arrival. Theory exam (open-book, ~30 min) at the centre on day 1 morning.
Day2
Confined water sessions
Pool or shallow lagoon. Gear assembly, buddy checks, then the core skills — buoyancy, mask clearing, regulator recovery, emergency ascent simulations. About 4 hours in-water.
Day3
Open water dives 1–2
First two ocean dives, max 12m. Skills repeated at depth. You'll see the reef, fish, possibly turtles — most students forget they're 'training' by dive 2.
Day4
Open water dives 3–4 + cert
Final two dives, max 18m. Navigation drill, buddy assists, full kit removal/replace. Certification issued at the end of dive 4 — you leave certified to dive worldwide.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to swim?
Yes — swim 200m nonstop (any stroke, no time limit) and float for 10 minutes. The float is the harder one for most people; the swim is forgiving. Most students who say they 'can't swim' actually pass.
Minimum age?
10 years. Junior Open Water depth limit (12m) applies up to age 14; full Open Water depth (18m) from 15+.
Where do the dives happen?
With FlyingFish in Goa (Grande Island reef), or any SSI-affiliated centre worldwide. The cert is identical.
What if weather cancels a dive day?
Goa has protected dive sites year-round; cancellations are rare. If we do call off a day, your training reschedules at no extra cost — pay-to-pass, not pay-to-date.
How long is the cert valid?
For life. SSI does recommend a Scuba Skills Update if you haven't dived in 12+ months — that's a 1-day refresher, not a re-cert.
Is SSI internationally recognised?
Yes — SSI is one of the world's largest training agencies, ISO-certified, accepted at every dive centre worldwide. Your dive shop in Maldives, Egypt, Thailand, Australia — they all recognise the SSI cert.
Can I add a specialty to upgrade quickly?
Yes — Enriched Air Nitrox (longer bottom times) or Perfect Buoyancy (better gas use, less fatigue) are the most popular pairings. See add-ons.
