About thresher sharks

Pelagic thresher sharks spend their lives in deep open water — the only reason recreational divers ever see them is Monad Shoal, a seamount near Malapascua in the Philippines, where they rise to a 20-metre cleaning station every dawn.

It's the world's only reliable thresher encounter. Boats leave at 4am, you're in the water by sunrise, and the sharks pass within metres — sometimes for 30 seconds, sometimes for the entire dive. Their tail is half their body length and is used to stun fish.

Best months are Dec–May (calmer seas), but threshers appear year-round. Requires Advanced certification (depth) and good buoyancy (don't crowd the cleaning station).

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to dive with thresher sharks?
Plan a 3-day Malapascua trip — most divers see threshers on dive 1. Stay 3 days as insurance for weather days.
What's the best destination for first-timers?
Cebu is the easiest entry point — short flights, beginner-friendly conditions, and reliable sightings during peak months.
What certification do I need?
Yes — Advanced Open Water (or equivalent) is strongly recommended. Sightings happen at depth (often 25–40m) or in current. PADI/SSI Advanced certification is the gateway, plus 20+ logged dives.
Photography tips?
Strobes off — pre-dawn means natural light + fast lens. ISO up, shutter 1/200, wide aperture. Position behind the cleaning rocks, not on top.
