Frequently asked questions
Will I navigate without a compass?
Yes — natural reference techniques (using the sun, depth contours, ripple direction) are taught alongside compass use. Most experienced divers use a mix of both on every dive.
Prerequisite?
SSI Open Water. Age 12+.
Is this useful if I always dive with a guide?
Definitely — when conditions get challenging or you get separated, navigation skills are what get you back to the boat safely.
Do I need to buy my own compass?
For the course, no — wrist compasses are included. For your own future dives, a basic dive compass costs ₹2,000–4,000 and is a great first investment after certification.
How accurate is underwater navigation?
Compass + kick-cycle counting gets you within 5–10m of your target on a 100m run. Combined with natural references, you can navigate complex routes confidently.
Can I do this at the same time as Advanced?
Navigation is one of the 5 dives in the Advanced Open Water course. If you do Advanced first, you can later take this Specialty for a deeper dive into the topic and the standalone cert.
