The ocean's apex predator. Pods hunt cooperatively — and in Norway, they herd herring while divers snorkel above.
Orcas (killer whales) are the largest dolphins — apex marine predators with matriarchal pod structure, highly developed echolocation, and culture passed across generations. Different populations specialise in different prey: salmon-eaters, marine-mammal hunters, fish-corralling herring specialists.
In-water encounters are rare and tightly regulated. Norway's Tysfjord/Skjervøy waters in winter (Oct–Jan) offer the world's most reliable encounter — snorkellers join pods hunting herring schools. New Zealand and Baja Mexico have summer charter encounters with specific pods.
Indo-Pacific encounters are opportunistic — Sri Lanka whale-watch tours occasionally encounter Indian Ocean orcas. The bucket-list encounter remains Norway.
