About humpback whales

Humpback whales are the most acrobatic of the great whales — full-body breaches, pectoral-fin slaps, tail-throws — and the only baleen whales that compose complex 'songs' that evolve year-by-year across whole populations. Males in calving grounds sing for up to 24 hours.

In our region the headline destinations are Sri Lanka (Trincomalee and Mirissa, sperm whales primary but humpbacks pass through Mar–Apr) and migrating populations along the Arabian coast. The world's best in-water humpback encounters are French Polynesia (Aug–Nov), Tonga, and the Dominican Republic — beyond FF's current destination set.

From the boat: dolphin-watching trips off Mirissa (Sri Lanka) deliver humpback sightings on the surface during the Dec–Apr migration. In-water swims require dedicated whale-swim charters.
