Course overview

The SSI Night Diving & Limited Visibility specialty certifies you to dive confidently after dark, ideal for Zanzibar's reefs that come alive at night. Stone Town's coral gardens near the Pange sand bank reveal hunting shrimps, crabs, eels and colour-flashing squid once the sun is down.

What you’ll learn

• Plan and execute night and low-visibility dives
• Operate primary and backup lights effectively
• Use light-based communication signals
• Maintain orientation and buoyancy in the dark
• Spot and identify nocturnal reef species
• Keep close buddy contact and manage emergencies at night

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 12 (junior) / 15 (adult)
• SSI Open Water Diver or equivalent
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

   After dark

   Digital academics and a light-handling briefing, then night training dives near Pange or the Stone Town gardens, practising signalling, navigation and critter spotting to certify.
