Course overview

The SSI Night Diving specialty opens up Trincomalee's reefs after sunset, when the east-coast sites take on a new character. Across your night dives around Nilaveli and Pigeon Island you learn light technique, signalling and night navigation, encountering nocturnal life such as lobsters, crabs and hunting reef fish.

What you’ll learn

• Plan and conduct safe night dives
• Use primary and backup lights properly
• Communicate with light signals after dark
• Navigate and keep buddy contact at night
• Spot and identify nocturnal marine life
• Manage buoyancy and night entries/exits

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 12
• SSI Open Water Diver or equivalent
• Comfortable with buoyancy control
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

1. Day1
   Night diving

   Study the digital academics and light-handling skills, then complete the night training dives over the calm reefs off Nilaveli before certifying.
