Course overview

The SSI Night Diving specialty opens up Alor's reefs after dark, when octopus, crustaceans and hunting predators take over the macro slopes. Through guided night dives you develop light technique, night navigation and after-dark communication so you can safely explore Alor's nocturnal underwater world.

What you’ll learn

• Plan and conduct a safe night dive
• Handle primary and backup lights effectively
• Communicate with light signals after dark
• Stay oriented and navigate in low visibility
• Identify nocturnal species and behaviour
• Keep buddy contact during night entries and exits

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 12 (junior certification for younger divers)
• SSI Open Water Diver or equivalent
• Comfortable with buoyancy and basic navigation
• Confident with low-light entries and exits
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

1. Day1
   Theory & night dive

   Complete the SSI digital module on night diving, then make your first guided night dive on a sheltered reef, practising light signals and spotting nocturnal life.
