Course overview

Build confidence and independence with the SSI Navigation specialty on the clear reefs of Mauritius's west coast. Diving from Flic-en-Flac on sites such as Aquarium, you learn compass technique, natural navigation and distance estimation to find your way around a site and back to the exit point. SSI's digital theory means you can study before you dive.

What you’ll learn

• Navigate precisely with a compass
• Read natural features like reef lines, slopes and sand ripples
• Estimate distance using kick cycles and time
• Swim reciprocal headings and navigation patterns
• Relocate a chosen point underwater
• Plan and lead a navigated dive

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 10 (Junior) or 15 for full certification
• SSI Open Water Diver or equivalent certification
• Basic buoyancy control
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day1
   Theory and navigation dives

   Complete the SSI digital theory, then practise compass and natural navigation across dives at a reef such as Aquarium, and certify.
