Course overview

Master underwater orientation with the SSI Navigation specialty in Ambon on the Banda Sea, where muck slopes and reef margins make precise navigation a genuinely useful skill. Through the SSI digital system you learn natural references, compass work and search patterns around sites such as the Coral Gardens, finishing certified to navigate confidently.

What you’ll learn

• Navigate by natural references such as slope, sand ripples and reef lines
• Steer accurate compass headings and reciprocals
• Judge distance using kick-cycles, time and air
• Run square and triangular navigation patterns
• Mark and return to an underwater feature
• Plan and follow a dive route independently

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 10 (junior)
• SSI Open Water Diver (or equivalent certification)
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

1. Day1
   Theory, compass & patterns

   Complete the MySSI navigation academics, then practise natural references, compass headings and patterns at a site such as the Coral Gardens, and certify.
