Course overview

Step up to teaching with the SSI Open Water Instructor pathway in Rasdhoo Atoll, a compact Maldivian island where shark-patrolled channels and 25-metre-plus visibility form a world-class training ground. After completing the Dive Control Specialist and Instructor Training Course modules, you rehearse student presentations on the sheltered house reef before working the surrounding thila sites, finishing ready for the SSI Instructor Evaluation.

What you’ll learn

• Plan and deliver SSI academic, confined-water and open-water teaching sessions
• Apply the SSI Total Teaching System and digital training platform
• Demonstrate and evaluate all fundamental scuba skills to professional standard
• Manage student risk and supervise training in drift and current conditions
• Conduct effective briefings, debriefings and skills circuits
• Prepare for the SSI Instructor Evaluation and gain authorisation to teach

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 18
• SSI Dive Guide / Divemaster or equivalent leadership rating from another agency
• Certified diver with a documented dive history
• Minimum 100 logged dives by the Instructor Evaluation
• Current React Right (CPR & first aid) and Diver Stress & Rescue certification
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day1
   Teaching system orientation

   Introduction to the SSI Total Teaching System and your first academic teaching presentations.
2. Day2
   Confined-water workshops

   Practise demonstrating and teaching skills in the calm shallows by the island.
3. Day3
   Open-water teaching

   Run open-water teaching circuits at gentle reef sites such as Three Palm under evaluation.
4. Day4
   Standards & theory

   Cover SSI standards, dive theory and risk management for professional members.
5. Day5
   Assessment dives

   Complete teaching and rescue assessments to Instructor Evaluation standard.
6. Day6
   Evaluation preparation

   Mock evaluations, presentation refinement and a full briefing before the SSI Instructor Evaluation.
