Course overview

Cross the line from leading dives to teaching them with the PADI Instructor Development Course in Rasdhoo Atoll, a tiny Maldivian island ringed by shark-rich channels and reliable 25-metre-plus visibility. Candidates rehearse teaching presentations in the calm shallows close to the harbour before the surrounding thila and channel sites become real-world classrooms, and you finish ready to sit the independent Instructor Examination and certify divers of your own.

What you’ll learn

• Deliver knowledge-development, confined-water and open-water teaching presentations
• Apply the PADI system of education, standards and student-assessment criteria
• Demonstrate and correct the 24 fundamental scuba skills to instructor standard
• Manage diver risk and run training to dive-centre operating procedures
• Brief, supervise and debrief students in drift and current conditions
• Prepare fully for the independent two-day Instructor Examination

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 18
• PADI Divemaster or a qualifying leadership rating from another recognised agency
• Certified diver for at least 6 months
• 60 logged dives to begin and 100 logged dives to sit the Instructor Examination
• Emergency First Response Instructor rating (can be completed alongside)
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician within the last 12 months

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day1
   Teaching foundations

   Orientation to the PADI system of education followed by your first knowledge-development classroom presentations.
2. Day2
   Confined-water workshops

   Demonstrate and teach core skills in the calm, shallow water near the island harbour.
3. Day3
   Open-water teaching

   Deliver open-water teaching circuits at sheltered reef sites such as Veligandu East under evaluation.
4. Day4
   Standards & risk management

   Work through dive standards, risk management and the business of running courses.
5. Day5
   Theory & rescue assessment

   Sit the dive-theory exams and complete the rescue-skills assessment to IDC standard.
6. Day6
   IE preparation

   Mock exams, presentation polishing and a full briefing before the independent Instructor Examination.
