Course overview

Make the leap from guiding to teaching with the PADI Instructor Development Course in Komodo, one of Indonesia's most demanding and rewarding current-diving classrooms. Candidates rehearse teaching presentations in calmer bays before honing judgement on the high-flow seamounts of the Komodo National Park, finishing the IDC ready to sit the Instructor Examination and certify divers of their own. Training in a place where reading tides and currents is second nature gives you the situational awareness that defines a strong instructor.

What you’ll learn

• Deliver knowledge-development, confined-water and open-water teaching presentations
• Apply the PADI system of education, dive standards and risk management
• Demonstrate, evaluate and correct student skills to instructor standard
• Brief, supervise and debrief students in real Komodo current conditions
• Run rescue scenarios and dive-theory assessments to IDC level
• Prepare fully for the independent PADI Instructor Examination

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 18
• PADI Divemaster or a qualifying leadership rating from another recognised agency
• Certified diver for at least 6 months
• 60 logged dives to begin the IDC and 100 to sit the Instructor Examination
• Emergency First Response Instructor rating (can be completed alongside)
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day1
   Teaching foundations

   Orientation to the PADI system of education and your first classroom knowledge-development presentations.
2. Day2
   Confined-water workshops

   Practise demonstrating and teaching core skills in calm, sheltered shallows before facing current sites.
3. Day3
   Open-water teaching

   Deliver open-water teaching circuits on gentler park reefs such as Siaba Besar under instructor evaluation.
4. Day4
   Standards and risk management

   Work through dive standards, current and tide planning, marketing and the business of diving.
5. Day5
   Theory and rescue assessment

   Sit the dive-theory exams and complete the rescue assessment to IDC standard.
6. Day6
   IE preparation

   Mock exams, presentation polishing and a full briefing for the independent Instructor Examination.
