About tuna

Tuna are the Ferraris of the reef edge — partially warm-blooded, hydrodynamically perfect, capable of sustained 70 km/h cruising and bursts beyond 100. Yellowfin (Thunnus albacares) school in open water and visit reefs to hunt; dogtooth tuna (Gymnosarda unicolor) are larger reef-edge specialists with prominent teeth.

Most encounters happen at the blue-water edge of channels and seamounts — current-swept dives at Maldives atolls, Red Sea reefs (Brothers, Daedalus), Komodo's Castle Rock. They appear from the blue, hit a bait school, and vanish; bring a wide-angle lens and a fast trigger finger.

Yellowfin populations are heavily fished but stable globally; dogtooth are tropical-Indo-Pacific specialists that don't migrate, so populations are vulnerable to localised overfishing. Diving them at protected sites supports the local fishery management.
