Silver giants with prehistoric biology. Schools of 100+ patrol Caribbean wrecks and reef channels.
Tarpon are evolutionary throwbacks — fish that can gulp air at the surface using a primitive lung-like swim bladder. The Atlantic species reaches 2.5 metres; the Indo-Pacific tarpon is smaller but still impressive. Their massive silver scales reflect light dramatically and made them famous in game fishing.
Best encounters: Caribbean wrecks and reef channels (Cuba's Jardines, Cayman walls, Bonaire bays). In our region, the Indo-Pacific tarpon (Megalops cyprinoides) appears in Andaman mangrove channels and Sri Lanka coastal lagoons — smaller but accessible.
Schools of 50–200 patrol shallow channels, accept divers calmly, and provide some of the easiest wide-angle silver-fish photography in scuba. Dawn dives produce the densest schooling.
