About sponges

Sponges are the most ancient animal lineage — over 600 million years old, predating jellyfish and corals. They filter water for plankton through millions of tiny pores, processing up to 10,000 litres per day for a large barrel sponge.

Common Indo-Pacific forms: giant barrel sponges (Xestospongia testudinaria) — some over a metre across and centuries old; tube sponges in pink, blue or yellow; encrusting sponges that paint coral surfaces in vivid colour patches.

They host whole micro-ecosystems — gobies, shrimp, hawkfish all live inside sponges. Andaman, Maldives, Bali, Red Sea — every reef. The barrel sponges of the Caribbean and Red Sea are the photo icons; tube sponges are reliable macro subjects.
