About soft coral

Soft corals (Alcyonacea) lack the hard calcium skeleton of stony corals — they're flexible, can inflate with water to several times their resting size, and contribute much of the colour of healthy reefs. Common types: dendronephthya (cauliflower) trees, sarcophyton mushrooms, and the gorgonian sea fans.

Each colony is thousands of tiny polyps, each with eight feathery tentacles (the octocoral signature). They feed by extending tentacles into current and capturing zooplankton.

Fiji's Rainbow Reef is the world's soft-coral capital. In our region: Komodo, Red Sea (Brothers/Daedalus), Raja Ampat. Andaman and Bali have respectable soft-coral cover at protected sites.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to dive with soft coral?
Year-round. Soft corals peak inflation during current — time dives accordingly.
What's the best destination for first-timers?
Havelock Island — India, 2-3 hours from India is the easiest entry point — short flights, beginner-friendly conditions, and reliable sightings during peak months.
What certification do I need?
No — Open Water certification is enough for soft coral encounters. Most sightings happen above 18m on standard recreational dives.
Photography tips?
Wide-angle for canopy scenes, macro for individual polyps. Strobes lift the colours — they look grey at depth without light.
