Australia's underwater dragons. Perfect kelp-mimics with leaf-like appendages — and the world's most ornate fish.
Seadragons are exclusively southern Australian — close relatives of seahorses with leaf-like skin appendages that mimic kelp and seaweed. The leafy seadragon (Phycodurus eques) is the more ornate species, with delicate leaf-like protrusions over the entire body. The weedy seadragon (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus) has fewer appendages but striking blue-and-yellow patterning.
Like seahorses, males carry the pregnancy — but in seadragons the eggs are held externally on the underside of the tail, not in a pouch. The pair-bond and dawn courtship are similar.
South Australia (Adelaide, Yorke Peninsula, Rapid Bay) is the world's leafy seadragon mecca. Tasmania and Sydney for weedy seadragons. Not in our current FF destinations — aspirational bucket-list.
