Rocks that eat fish. Cryptic camouflage so perfect divers kneel on them — and pay the price.
Scorpionfish are the masters of cryptic camouflage on the reef — algae-encrusted patterns, frilly skin lobes, and an absolute stillness that lets them disappear against coral rubble and sponges. The leaf scorpionfish (Taenianotus triacanthus) is one of the most photogenic — bright yellow, red or white, swaying like a leaf on the substrate.
Their dorsal spines are venomous — not as deadly as stonefish, but painful enough to ruin a dive. The danger is real: divers who lean on a rock or grab a 'piece of coral' to brace against current are the most common sting victims. Look before you place hands.
Lembeh, Anilao, Bali (Tulamben), Andaman and Komodo all hold multiple scorpionfish species. The hunt for them is half the dive — once your eye trains for the irregular outline against substrate, you'll find one on every dive.
