About sand tiger sharks

Sand tiger sharks (also called grey nurse sharks in Australia, ragged-tooth sharks in South Africa) have the most ferocious-looking face in the shark world — protruding needle teeth always visible, even when the mouth is closed. The reality is the opposite: they're calm, slow, and one of the most docile shark species divers encounter.

They're the only shark species that intentionally gulps air at the surface and holds it in their stomach for neutral buoyancy — hovering motionless in caves and wrecks for hours. North Carolina's coast (Aug–Oct), South Africa's Aliwal Shoal (Jun–Nov), and Australia's east coast are the main encounter sites.

Listed Critically Endangered after decades of bycatch and finning — populations have crashed 70%+ in many ranges. Not in our destination set; aspirational specialty trip from the US east coast or South Africa.
