Egypt's controversial wreck — many divers refuse to visit due to the loss of life.
Salem Express was an Egyptian ro-ro passenger ferry that struck Hyndman Reef off Port Safaga and sank on 14 December 1991. Official death toll was around 470 but unofficial estimates exceed 1,600. Many bodies are believed to still be inside.
She lies on her side at 12–32 m. Penetration is technically possible but the wreck is widely considered a war grave; many dive operators and divers refuse to enter the hull and instead circle the exterior only. The wreck is fully encrusted with marine life.
Advanced Open Water is enough for external swims. The site is dived from Port Safaga and southern Red Sea liveaboards. Sensitivity to the human cost is expected — no flash photography of personal items, no penetration without operator approval.
