Fastest fish in the ocean. Hunts sardine bait balls in coordinated teams — and the dorsal sail is the showpiece.
Sailfish are pelagic billfish — long bill, electric-blue iridescent body, and an enormous dorsal 'sail' they raise during high-speed bursts (up to 110 km/h, the fastest verified fish speed). They're warm-blooded around the eye and brain for sharper vision at depth.
The bucket-list encounter is Isla Mujeres (Mexico) — sailfish work together to herd sardine bait balls to the surface, then take turns striking the school. Snorkellers (not scuba — bubbles spook them) are dropped in the bait ball for some of the most dramatic underwater encounters anywhere on Earth.
From our region: Red Sea liveaboards occasionally encounter sailfish during open-water transits. Sri Lanka and Mozambique have offshore charter encounters during their respective sardine-run seasons. Dedicated sailfish trips remain a Mexico or Costa Rica affair.
