Under two centimetres. Lives its entire adult life on one sea fan — and you'll need a guide to find them.
Pygmy seahorses are among the smallest vertebrates on Earth — under 2.7 cm fully grown, with tubercles on their bodies that perfectly match the polyp pattern of their host sea fan. Bargibanti pygmies live on Muricella sea fans; Denise pygmies on other gorgonians; Pontohi pygmies on algae.
Each individual is host-specific — they spend their entire adult life on a single fan, often the same one for months or years. The pair-bond is permanent; mating dances happen at dawn every day for the bonded pair.
Komodo, Raja Ampat, Lembeh, Anilao and Bali (Tulamben) are the global hotspots. You won't find them yourself — local guides know individual sea fans hosting individual seahorses and lead you straight there. Photography requires steady buoyancy and a focused diopter macro setup.
