About pipefish

Pipefish are the long, straight-bodied relatives of seahorses (same family, Syngnathidae) — typically drifting through seagrass beds, coral rubble or sea-fan branches with horizontal body posture. Banded, ringed, schultz's and reedfish are common Indo-Pacific species.

Like seahorses, males carry the pregnancy — fertilised eggs incubate in pouches on the male's abdomen. The species' courtship dances are intricate, often happening at dawn.

Lembeh, Anilao, Bali, Komodo, Andaman seagrass and rubble sites. Once guides know a pipefish patch, the same individuals stay for weeks.
