Frogfish with fleshy 'hair'. Lembeh's most photographed muck-diving subject.
The hairy frogfish (Antennarius striatus) is a hairy variant of the striated frogfish — covered in fleshy filaments that look like hair or algae, providing extreme camouflage on muck substrates. They're the iconic Lembeh Strait muck species and one of the most photographed critters in macro diving.
Like all frogfish they're sit-and-wait ambush predators with a lure ('illicium') they dangle from a modified fin to attract prey. Strikes are 6 milliseconds — one of the fastest in the animal kingdom.
Lembeh, Anilao, Bali (Secret Bay). Local guides know individual hairy frogfish that have lived in the same patch for weeks. Adult colours range from white-and-pink to dramatic black.
