The iconic apex predator. Cage dives at Guadalupe and Neptune Islands — bucket-list, not on FF's reef destinations.
Great whites are the largest predatory fish in the ocean — females reach 6 metres and 2,000 kg, partially warm-blooded for explosive acceleration, and the apex of every food chain they touch. The species made famous (and demonised) by Jaws is, by every modern dive operator's experience, calm and curious in the water.
Encounters are cage-based: Guadalupe Island (Mexico, Aug–Nov) has the world's clearest water and most reliable predictable sharks. South Africa's Gansbaai and the Neptune Islands (South Australia) offer alternatives. These are dedicated specialty trips — not part of any FF reef itinerary.
Listed Vulnerable globally. Cage diving has paradoxically been one of the biggest conservation wins for the species — bringing tourism revenue and population data that have driven legal protections in most range states. Plan a 5–7 day Guadalupe liveaboard as the bucket-list capstone.
