About gorgonian sea fans

Gorgonian sea fans are the architectural icons of wall dives — branching colonies of polyps in oranges, reds, purples and yellows, oriented perpendicular to the current to maximise plankton filter-feeding. Large fans can exceed 3 metres across and live for over a century.

They're the only home of pygmy seahorses, which match the fan species so precisely they were missed by science until photographs revealed them in the 1960s. Every dive guide knows which fans host which pygmies.

Wall dives across Bali (Tulamben Drop-off), Komodo (Castle Rock), Raja Ampat, Red Sea (Brothers Islands), Sipadan, Maldives. Best photographed against blue water with the diver in frame for scale.
