The reef's apex predator. Hits bait balls so hard they explode — and famously snatches terns from the air.
Giant trevally (GT) are the apex jacks of the Indo-Pacific — massive silvery bodies, blunt foreheads, and a reputation for explosive predatory strikes. They hunt in pairs or small packs, often joining reef sharks to corral bait balls into shallow water before exploding into the school.
The behaviour that made them famous on BBC's Blue Planet II: hunting fledgling terns at Farquhar Atoll (Seychelles) — GTs leap clear of the water to snatch chicks attempting their first flight. Smaller-scale hunting drama plays out at every reef channel — bait balls, glassfish schools, fleeing fusiliers.
Reliable at every FF destination: Maldives channels (especially during incoming tide), Sipadan, Komodo, Red Sea, Andaman. They tolerate close approach when feeding — hover and watch the chase from 5 metres back.
