About giant clams

Giant clams are the reef's largest invertebrates — up to 1.4 metres across and weighing over 200 kg. The fleshy mantle they display when open is patterned with iridescent blue, gold and emerald-green that comes from symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) living inside the tissue, the same partnership that powers reef-building corals.

They're listed Vulnerable due to centuries of harvesting for shells, meat and the aquarium trade. Healthy populations now mostly survive in well-protected reserves and remote reefs.

Reliable: Maldives, Komodo (especially Manta Alley), Sipadan, Raja Ampat, Andaman, Bali. The Bumphead Parrotfish dive at any of these often passes giant clams as a bonus.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to dive with giant clams?
Year-round. Mantles are fully extended during daylight — close at dusk and during disturbance.
What's the best destination for first-timers?
Havelock Island — India, 2-3 hours from India is the easiest entry point — short flights, beginner-friendly conditions, and reliable sightings during peak months.
What certification do I need?
No — Open Water certification is enough for giant clams encounters. Most sightings happen above 18m on standard recreational dives.
Photography tips?
Get the mantle edge sharp — that's where the iridescent colour pattern is densest. Side-lighting at 45° avoids washing out the blues.
