Island shark of the Pacific. Schools at Darwin and Wolf, Cocos Island, Lord Howe — pelagic in feel, reef-like in habit.
Galápagos sharks are confusingly similar to grey reef sharks but bigger, more confident, and specialised for upwelling around remote oceanic islands. They patrol the channels and seamounts of Galápagos (Darwin and Wolf), Cocos Island (Costa Rica), Lord Howe (Australia), Hawaii's outer atolls, and a handful of similar deep-water island systems.
They're known for confidence around divers — schools of 20+ pass within metres, often unfazed by bubbles. The Darwin and Wolf concentration is one of the world's densest shark biomass figures (per square kilometre) ever measured.
Not in any FF destination — Galápagos requires a 10+ day liveaboard from Quito, with hammerhead schools, whale sharks (Aug–Nov) and Galápagos sharks all on the same trip. Aspirational for divers who've done the Indian Ocean and want the Pacific equivalent.
