Full-bodied reef hunters. Sweeping silver flanks and powerful jaws — the workhorse predator of Indo-Pacific reefs.
Emperor fish are mid-to-large reef predators with silvery deep bodies and powerful jaws for crushing crustaceans and small fish. The spangled emperor (Lethrinus nebulosus) and longface emperor (L. olivaceus) are common across the Indo-Pacific.
They patrol sand-coral transitions, often digging into sand with their face to extract buried prey. Schools of 5–20 are common at reef-edge sites; solitary large adults patrol drop-offs.
Andaman, Maldives, Red Sea — reliable. Their size and silver flank reflectivity makes them strong wide-angle subjects.
