About crinoids

Crinoids — feather stars and sea lilies — are among the most ancient animal lineages still alive. The fossil record shows their body plan essentially unchanged since the early Triassic, 250 million years ago. The feathery arms filter plankton from current.

By day they perch on coral heads, sea fans and sponges with arms folded; at night they spread the feathery arms into the current to feed. Their colour range is spectacular — yellow, black, red, electric green, leopard-spotted, even pink-and-blue striped.

Reliable across the Indo-Pacific: Andaman, Maldives, Bali, Komodo, Raja Ampat. They're easy to photograph — slow-moving, photogenic at multiple distances, and live on host coral for years.
