About reef crabs

Reef crabs are the macro-photographer's deep well — boxer crabs (Lybia spp.) hold venomous anemones in each claw like pom-poms; decorator crabs glue sponges and algae to their carapace; porcelain crabs filter-feed inside anemones; orangutan crabs hide in bubble corals.

Most are cryptic — you walk your eyes slowly across substrate for shapes that don't quite match the background. Local guides know specific sponge or coral hosts for each crab species.

Lembeh, Anilao, Bali (Tulamben), Andaman muck sites. Every dive in a serious macro destination produces 3–5 crab species if your guide is sharp-eyed.
