The Caribbean's photogenic octopus. Vivid blue-green coloration and a habit of hunting at dawn and dusk.
Caribbean reef octopus (Octopus briareus) are the photogenic Atlantic counterpart to the Indo-Pacific day octopus — vivid blue-green-red coloration that shifts in real time, hunting habits that range across dawn-dusk-night, and a curiosity around divers that often results in tentacle-on-camera interactions.
They're nocturnal hunters that hide in coral crevices and shipwrecks by day. Cayman Islands, Bonaire, Roatán and Cozumel are the encounter staples; night dives are 5× the daytime sighting rate.
Not in any FF destination — aspirational Caribbean trip. Pair with whale shark season (Aug–Sep in Mexico's Isla Mujeres) for a bucket-list combo.
