About bull sharks

Bull sharks are stocky, powerful reef predators with the rare ability to tolerate fresh water — they've been recorded hundreds of miles up rivers. On reefs they're ambush hunters; populations are recovering in some regions and declining in others.

Encounter destinations are specific: Beqa (Fiji), Cabo Pulmo (Mexico), Protea Banks (South Africa). Closer to India, certain Maldives atoll sites produce occasional bull-shark sightings. They're not on every reef — plan a trip specifically for them.

They're less predictable than reef sharks — always with a guide, never wear shiny jewellery, never dive at dawn or dusk when they're actively hunting.
