About blue whales

Blue whales are the largest animals known to have ever existed — bigger than any dinosaur, with hearts the size of small cars and tongues that weigh as much as elephants. Each adult eats up to 3,600 kg of krill per day in summer feeding grounds.

Sri Lanka's south coast (Mirissa) is one of the few places on Earth where blue whales come within reliable boat range — they pass between feeding and breeding grounds Dec–Apr and surface within sight of half-day whale watching tours from the harbour.

Population recovery from 20th-century commercial whaling has been slow — they remain Endangered. Sri Lankan operators with code-of-conduct compliance run respectful surface-only encounters; in-water swims are not legal there. Pair a Sri Lanka dive trip with a Dec–Apr whale-watch day for the bucket-list capstone.
