About blue sharks

Blue sharks have the longest pectoral fins of any shark relative to body size and the most striking colour — deep indigo above, electric blue flanks, white below. They're transoceanic migrators, tagged individuals crossing the Atlantic in a single season.

They almost never visit coral reefs — most recreational encounters happen on chartered blue-water trips off the Azores, Cape Cod, or South Africa. From our destinations, the closest reliable encounter is Egypt's Red Sea liveaboards on the open-water transits between sites.

Despite their pelagic life they're surprisingly approachable — slow circling around bait, curious about divers, easy to photograph in blue water. Tens of millions are killed annually for shark-fin trade, but legal protections are slowly improving.
