False Moorish Idols. Black-and-white striped reef fish with a long trailing dorsal banner.
Bannerfish (genus Heniochus) are commonly mistaken for the iconic Moorish Idol (Zanclus cornutus, a different family entirely) — both have a tall white dorsal 'banner' that streams behind as they swim, plus bold black-and-white-yellow stripes.
Unlike Moorish Idols (which are solitary), bannerfish often gather in pairs or small loose schools around coral heads, picking plankton from the water. They're easy to approach and provide reliable wide-angle reef photography.
Reliable at every Indo-Pacific destination: Andaman, Maldives, Bali, Red Sea, Phuket. The schooling bannerfish (Heniochus diphreutes) is the most photogenic — found in groups of 20+ on outer reef walls.
