Course overview

The SSI Wreck Diving specialty in Papua New Guinea certifies you to explore the region's celebrated WWII shipwrecks and reef-encrusted hulls safely. Diving accessible wreck sites where sunken vessels have become living reefs, you master survey, navigation and hazard management under instructor guidance. It unlocks one of the world's great wreck-diving destinations with the right skills.

What you’ll learn

• Plan and execute safe wreck dives within recreational limits
• Survey and map a wreck's structure
• Navigate a wreck exterior with a reference line
• Manage wreck-specific hazards including silt and entanglement
• Use lights and lines for limited overhead awareness
• Appreciate the history and marine ecology of local wrecks

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 15
• SSI Open Water Diver (or equivalent), with deeper sites needing Advanced experience
• Comfort at the depths involved (typically to 30 m)
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day1
   Academics & first wreck dive

   SSI wreck-diving theory, hazard planning and an orientation survey dive on a local wreck.
2. Day2
   Mapping & navigation

   Map the wreck and practise reference-line navigation, then complete the SSI certification.
