Course overview

Build dependable underwater orientation with the SSI Navigation specialty in Komodo, where reading currents and finding your way are part of every dive. You learn compass technique, natural navigation and distance estimation, all sharpened by Komodo's drift conditions. You finish certified as an SSI Navigation specialist.

What you’ll learn

• Navigate accurately with a compass on reciprocal headings
• Use natural references like reef contour and depth gradient
• Estimate distance by kick cycles and elapsed time
• Run square and search navigation patterns
• Relocate a point and lead a navigation dive
• Allow for current set and drift when navigating

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 10 (junior certification)
• SSI Open Water Diver or equivalent
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day1
   Compass and natural navigation

   Study navigation theory via MySSI, then complete the navigation dives practising compass headings, natural references and search patterns, finishing with certification.
