Course overview

Take charge of your own dive route with the SSI Navigation specialty in Key Largo. On the clear spur-and-groove reefs of John Pennekamp, you learn compass and natural navigation to plan, follow and complete underwater courses accurately. You finish able to lead your buddy team back to the mooring with confidence on any Florida Keys reef.

What you’ll learn

• Read natural features like reef lines and sand ripples
• Estimate distance using kick cycles and time
• Execute reciprocal and multi-leg navigation patterns
• Relocate a dive site or mooring reliably

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 10
• SSI Open Water Diver or equivalent certification
• Comfortable basic buoyancy control
• Medical clearance signed by a physician
