Course overview

Sharpen your sense of direction with the PADI Underwater Navigation specialty in Fiji, learning to find your way around Beqa Lagoon's soft-coral pinnacles using natural references and a compass. Across three dives you practise reciprocal headings, distance estimation and navigation patterns on sites where currents and pinnacle topography make accurate navigation genuinely useful. It also satisfies a Rescue Diver prerequisite.

What you’ll learn

• Navigate accurately using natural references
• Use a compass for reciprocal and pattern navigation
• Estimate distance with kick cycles and time
• Run square, rectangular and other search patterns
• Relocate a submerged object or point of interest
• Maintain orientation in current and varied topography

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 10 (Junior) or 15
• PADI Open Water Diver (or qualifying certification)
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician where required

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day1
   Natural navigation

   Learn natural-reference navigation and distance estimation on a sheltered Beqa Lagoon reef.
2. Day2
   Compass & patterns

   Practise compass navigation, reciprocal headings and search patterns, then complete the specialty assessment.
