Course overview

Cross the line from leading dives to teaching them with the PADI Instructor Development Course on Gili Trawangan, where warm 27-29°C water and the island's gentle, current-fed reefs give candidates a forgiving stage to rehearse teaching presentations. With turtle-rich sites like Turtle Heaven and Shark Point a short boat ride away, you build the standards, demonstrations and risk-management skills needed to sit the Instructor Examination and certify divers of your own.

What you’ll learn

• Deliver knowledge-development, confined-water and open-water teaching presentations to PADI standards
• Demonstrate core scuba skills slowly and flawlessly for student divers
• Evaluate and correct student performance using the PADI system of education
• Manage diver risk, briefings and supervision on Gili reef sites
• Run dive-theory, standards and rescue assessments to IDC level
• Prepare fully for the independently administered Instructor Examination

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 18
• PADI Divemaster or a qualifying leadership rating from another recognised agency
• Certified diver for at least 6 months
• 60 logged dives to begin the IDC, 100 to sit the Instructor Examination
• Current EFR Instructor rating (can be completed alongside)
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day1
   IDC orientation & teaching foundations

   Introduction to the PADI system of education and your first classroom knowledge-development presentations.
2. Day2
   Confined-water workshops

   Practise demonstration-quality skills and teaching technique in the calm shallows off the Gili reef.
3. Day3
   Open-water teaching

   Deliver open-water teaching presentations and skill circuits at sheltered sites near Turtle Heaven under evaluation.
4. Day4
   Standards & dive business

   Work through PADI standards, risk management, marketing and the business of running courses.
5. Day5
   Theory & rescue assessment

   Sit dive-theory exams and complete the rescue assessment to IDC standard.
6. Day6
   IE preparation

   Mock exams, presentation polishing and a full briefing for the independent Instructor Examination.
